MY THOUGHTS
I’ve been a fan of leather fragrances for as long as I can remember. There’s something special about the raw material itself. Moreover, all the gorgeous representations of it in perfumery continue to fascinate me. Therefore, when I discovered Cuir d’Orient by Sous le Manteau back in 2018, it felt like finding treasure.
At that time, this brand was not yet widespread. In fact, it was a hidden gem at our local counter. From the first moment, it was love at first sight. To date, I’ve never felt more enthusiastic about a soft suede scent. Now, after several years, I still love it deeply. Whenever it’s cold outside, I wear it everywhere without hesitation.
Cuir d’Orient manages to be very elegant, fragile, and spicy all at the same time. This balance is remarkable. However, what truly captivates me is the vanilla presence in this fragrance. Every time I wear it, I think of little crème brûlée desserts. Specifically, it has that similar milkiness of vanilla supported by benzoin and musk. Additionally, it delivers this delicious burned brown sugar vibe that makes my mouth water.
Interestingly, even though patchouli appears in the base notes, I don’t really detect it. Instead, to me it’s all about suede first and foremost. Then comes that freshly made crème brûlée character. Sweet resins add depth and warmth. Ultimately, it evokes the feeling of entering a warm home after being outside in a blizzard. That contrast between cold and cozy defines the entire experience.
I adore how cozy and soothing Cuir d’Orient truly is. It wraps around you like a soft blanket. At the same time, it maintains sophistication and refinement. This isn’t a casual comfort scent. Rather, it’s elegant comfort, the kind that makes you feel both pampered and put-together.
The suede quality here differs from harsher leather interpretations. It’s soft and tactile, almost velvety. Consequently, it feels approachable rather than challenging. The sweetness from vanilla and burned sugar never becomes cloying. Instead, it remains balanced by the leather and resinous elements. As a result, the fragrance stays wearable throughout long winter days.
For cold weather wear, this has become an absolute staple in my collection. It performs beautifully when temperatures drop. The warmth and richness feel perfectly suited to bundling up in coats and scarves. Furthermore, it creates an intimate cocoon of scent that stays close while still being noticeable.
Cuir d’Orient represents everything I love about leather fragrances. It takes a potentially austere note and renders it comforting. It balances elegance with accessibility. Most importantly, it creates an emotional response that goes beyond simply smelling good. This is the kind of fragrance that becomes part of your cold-weather ritual, something you reach for instinctively when frost appears on windows and you crave that feeling of warmth and safety.
