FREDERIC MALLE DRIES VAN NOTEN
OFFICIAL BRAND STATEMENT
It seems to me that the enveloping warmth of Dries Van Noten’s aesthetic – enriched with embroidered Indian motifs, scenes from 18th century engravings, and stark color contrasts – springs not only from harsh Belgian winters, but also from the country’s history as one of the great trade hubs in the days of empire. Thick textures, colorful prints and Indian spices introduced a kind of domestic comfort that is now inherent to Flemish life and to Dries’ designs.
I asked Bruno Jovanovic – who possesses a flair for warm scents – to compose a perfume around Dries’ world. He decided to compose it around natural sandalwood, which he chose for being simultaneously soft and exotic, homely and unusual.
Allying sandalwood’s milky aspect with vanilla, saffron and sacrasol, and tempering it with a jasmine and white musk accord, Bruno created a lasting effect of buttery warmth, reminiscent of milky tea and speculoos biscuits, to see you through the winter. Like a couture winter coat and so many of Dries’ pieces, it is timeless, classic, and yet, ever so sensuous.

MY THOUGHTS
Frederic Malle Dries Van Noten represents a collaboration between perfumer and fashion designer that results in something genuinely gender-neutral and deeply comforting. Created by the famous Belgian designer of the Antwerp Six, this fragrance showcases a rare treasure in modern perfumery: Mysore sandalwood from India’s Mysore region, an ingredient that’s become increasingly precious and difficult to source. It is also one of my all time favourite scent profiles and ingredients. I am a Samsara girlie after all.
The opening of Dries van Noten establishes itself with fresh saffron and citrus that prove very dominant on skin. Calabrian lemon and bergamot provide bright, clean freshness while saffron adds its characteristic spicy, slightly leathery warmth. Nutmeg contributes additional spice, and carnation brings its distinctive clove-like sharpness with peppery floral nuances. This introduction feels inviting and immediately wearable, setting the stage for the transformation to come. Funny enough, I get massive bread dough vibe from this fragance. And I love it!
After some time, the opening passes and the composition transitions into the most wonderful fuzzy, creamy sandalwood-vanilla territory. The Mysore sandalwood reveals why it’s so prized, delivering a smooth, milky creaminess with subtle sweetness that differs markedly from the sharper, more austere character of Australian sandalwood commonly used today. Egyptian jasmine absolute adds floral richness without dominating, while patchouli contributes earthy depth that grounds the creaminess and prevents it from becoming too soft or one-dimensional.
What makes the development particularly interesting, as I already mentioned, is an unexpected note of fresh baked goods that emerges at some point during wear. This bread-like aroma isn’t something you’d anticipate from the listed notes, yet it appears as a quirky and compelling facet that adds character. It’s not overtly yeasty but rather suggests warmth and comfort, like walking past a bakery on a cool morning. This unexpected quality makes Frederic Malle Dries Van Noten best suited for colder months rather than spring and summer, as the warmth and richness could become overwhelming in heat.
The base reveals vanilla, sulfurol, Peru balsam, and musk working together to create lasting comfort. Peru balsam brings resinous sweetness with hints of vanilla and cinnamon, while the vanilla itself adds creamy richness. Sulfurol contributes a leathery, slightly smoky quality that adds edge and prevents the composition from becoming too sweet. Musk provides skin-like intimacy and impressive longevity, helping the fragrance achieve its 16+ hour performance.
After multiple hours of wear, the fragrance lurks in milky gourmand territory, maintaining that creamy sandalwood-vanilla character while taking on an increasingly soft, almost edible quality. The projection sits at moderate to strong throughout, creating luxurious sillage that announces your presence without overwhelming.
This makes an excellent evening scent, particularly for occasions where you want to maintain a relaxed, approachable vibe while still projecting luxury and sophistication. If you want to stay white-T casual but with a sumptuous sillage for a night out, this is the ultimate choice. It’s the olfactory equivalent of effortless elegance, where quality speaks louder than obvious displays of wealth or complexity. The gender-neutral character means it works beautifully across all wearers, adapting to individual skin chemistry while maintaining its core identity of fuzzy, creamy warmth anchored by that precious treasure of a sandalwood.
