MY THOUGHTS

ANOMALIA PARIS Umbra Oud presents a striking paradox of dark woodiness and luminous freshness from the get go. My first encounter with it was rather surprising. I was expecting yet another boring oud-rose combo and my eyebrows went up in disbelief when I got a totally unique scent in this (nowadays utterly boring for me) category. This here isn’t the warm, honeyed oozing deeply sweet oud of traditional Middle Eastern perfumery. Nor is it the medicinal or sharply animalic oud either. Yes, there is kick and skank to it, but it has been upscaled to the level of cohesive “a bit of everything” poshness I’m yet to experience in oudy scents. Combined with uplifting bright opening and viola, you got my attention.

I am positively flabbergasted how well balanced and nuanced this fragrance is. Instead the monotone floral woody profile with tons of sticky sweetness, I have at the same time bright and dark scent on my skin. Fascinating duality, creating something both powerful and mysterious through the interplay of opposing forces.

The opening arrives opulent and sparkling in a way that initially suggests berries, particularly blackcurrant, even though none are listed. The intensity on skin is immediately vibrant, commanding attention from the first spray. Cardamom pod lends smoothness and a typical spicy warmth. Fun part is the resinous touch of elemi oil – it contributes to the fizzy and bright character with hints of lemony resinous nuances running in parallel with pink pepper and incense. Rose appears early on as well, but this isn’t soft or romantic kind. Instead, it reads as cool and slightly metallic, setting the tone for the icy interpretation, establishing brightness that somehow feels cold rather than warm.

The elemi and cardamom dominate the opening hour on my skin, with vibrant clarity, slowly but steadily giving way to the heart of the scent, where smoky woods show their true colors. What also happens on my skin is that during the midwear, incense-dense elegance shows up. Laotian oud is typically one of the darkest in terms of olfactory profile and it is certainly smoky. Yet somehow on my skin it translates into super dense and air engulfing incense, my nose is playing tricks on me. And then it comes, my favourite part: slightly funky, dry, warm and woody. Burgundy rose emerges here with more presence, darker and richer than the initial cool impression, adding depth and a wine-like quality that makes the scent even more round than it is.

There is an interesting mineral salinity and slightly waxy texture adding to the scent. It’s almost palpable at this point. Everything is opulent to the brim, yet without obnoxious heaviness. To my nose, it’s been certainly a thrill ride, one I can recommend to people who are as tired as I am from low quality basic-bitch rose-oud blends. Performans is beyond any desires as well, big thumbs up to Anomalia for making this one see the world.

Both outstanding when it comes to unique symbiosis the fragrance promises. They carry little in common in terms of the scent output, but are executed in an equally amazing manner. So if you are hunting for entirely different take on oud, pay attention to them both.
